Piper Reva baring her soul

Maybe it’s her lyrics, a mixture of purring wit, wisdom and screeching bared soul. Maybe it’s her music, a catchy combination of Southern blues, Janis Joplin and Neil Young-inspired folk and pop.

Or maybe it’s the way she takes the stage like a live music video, full of sexy and sweet bravado stitched with tragic drama, donning fishnet stockings, combat boots, colorful hats and feathers.

Whatever it is, Piper Reva has found herself in demand lately, taking the stage at a long list of familiar venues across the Pacific Northwest.

The singer/songwriter from the “Dragon’s Tail” of Whidbey Island can be found with her trusty guitar and bluesy voice on a vaiety of stages, busting out a song or two in her unique, theatrical way.

Her passionate music has garnered a mixture of enthusiastic praise and curious eyebrow-raising. It’s also grabbed the attention of famous performers. Reva opened for alternative band 10,000 Maniacs in January 2010 at the Bromley Theater in Bradford, Pa.

Some have described her music in the storytelling traditions of Bob Dylan, weaving tales that she said are inspired by her own personal experiences — the people she’s met, the places she’s traveled.

But she doesn’t like to compare her music to other songwriters.

“There’s no similar thread to the names that come along (of other performers), and that’s really cool to me,” she said.

With two albums behind her and a third on the way, Reva said she feels on the edge of giving birth to a bigger, more successful career.
